Ruback, Paul
Paul Ruback, Lad.25 “Adopting Parents” Paul Ruback was dedicated to his six children and firefighting. He came from a long line of firefighters: several uncles and cousins served with New York’s bravest. The day he became a firefighter was his proudest moment and no matter how exhausted he was after a day of work, he was never too tired for his children. Loved ones called the 6-feet-4-inch Ruback a “gentle giant.” He is survived by his wife, Lynne, and his children – David, 18; Gina, 17; Shannon, 11; Paul, 2, and two stepchildren, Danny and Denyse. He was 50…Firefighter Paul (Paulie) Ruback was the gentle giant of Ladder 25. At 6-foot 6 ¼, he had an imposing presence, but he used it in moderation. On the job, he would never turn away from adversity. One of the happiest days of Paul’s life was when he was sworn in to the New York City fire Dept. He followed in the footsteps of many of his firefighter relatives, his uncle John Carrig being the most influential, since he spent many summers with him and his cousins, George, (NY PD) and Tommy (FDNY). Paul and his wife had the privilege of being foster parents to many children. There was always room for one more in their home. One of the next happiest days of Paul’s life was the adoption of David, Gina, and Shannon. (foster children from birth until their adoption). They are blossoming into fine adults thanks to Paul’s guidance. Another great day in Paul’s life was the birth of his son Paul Christopher. Paul loved playing soccer, basketball, hiking, camping, and being with his family. At the firehouse he strummed his guitar, at home he loved History. We always had a house full of people, Dinners, barbecues, Christmas, holidays, Our house was the place where family and friends gathered. He had an ear for anyone with a problem, and in his calm way could usually make what appeared to be a grave situation seem not so bad after all. Aside from Paul’s family, extended family, foster kids, and friends, Paul leaves behind his three sisters. His twin, Jane, and his older sisters Pat and Kathy. “Too Tall Paul” ( the guys in Ladder 25 use to call him) will be missed by so many. No one will forget his kind, gentle ways and soothing voice. I will never forget the man I knew, married and loved for more than 20 years. Lynne Ruback Line of Duty Death – September 11, 2001 IAFF Local 94, New York, NY
